Direct Primary Care (DPC) is more than a model of delivering healthcare – it is a health care movement driven by some of the best and brightest primary care physicians in the country focused on putting the patient-doctor relationship first. There are over 1600 DPC practices across the country with more clinics opening all the time. This is the future of medicine.
Direct primary care (DPC) is a medical practice in which patients enter into a direct relationship with the doctor and pay a fixed amount in exchange for primary care services. It is an innovative, affordable option which improves access to medical care, reduce the number of people who now lack such access, and cut down on emergency room use for primary care purposes, thereby freeing up emergency room facilities to treat true emergencies.
Through elimination of health insurance and instead using a membership for primary care coverage, DPC doctors can remove the “middlemen” including coders, billers, layers of administrators, staff and for-profit insurance companies that are dictating care while inflate costs and are a barrier to accessible and quality care.
ROW Health can focus solely on providing truly unrushed, personalized, proactive care for members. It allows for price transparency and lower costs. Think about it – we reserve our home and car insurance for critical and catastrophic use. It is not meant for our primary needs to maintain or fix our home or car. Similarly, health insurance is not created to cover comprehensive primary care, hence why insurance is so expensive and unusable. A large actuarial study found that Direct Primary Care members had fewer ER visits/costs, 25% lower hospital admissions, and lower risk-adjusted claim costs.

“DPC is about focusing our attention, time, and effort on caring for our patients – directly, without oversight from nonmedical administrators, using evidence-based guidelines individualized for the circumstances of each patient.” – DPC Family Physician,

Direct Primary Care is “an innovative, affordable option which could improve access to medical care, reduce the number of people who now lack such access, and cut down on emergency room use for primary care purposes.”
The model of Direct Primary Care (DPC) is the answer to this by providing meaningful change.

Is Direct Primary Care
Different From Traditional Medicine?
Think about the traditional “fee for service” medical care practice you are used to:
• Booked far in the future.
• Phone trees to scramble through re-telling your story to each new stranger you talk to along the way.
• Greeted at the office with “license and registration, please” and “your co-pay is …”
• Long wait times in packed waiting rooms.
• Short visits with the physician (or advanced practitioner), likely one you never even met before.
• Only able to discuss 1-2 concerns, then told you need to schedule another appointment to address additional
concerns.
• Surprise bill in a few months, some parts declined by insurance. This is in addition to your co-pay for each visit!
• Limited access to follow up on the issues addressed.
In traditional health systems, did you know:
• Family physicians are tasked with caring for a panel of 2,000-3,500+ patients.
• A new patient typically waits 1-3 months for the next available appointment to establish care.
• Established patients wait an average of 29 days out from their scheduled appointment.
• Physicians spend, on average, 7.4 minutes of face-to-face time with the patient.
• Family physicians are “burning out” at an alarming rate. It has been renamed “moral injury.”

In the traditional care model, it comes as no surprise that obtaining an appointment with a primary care doctor can be quite challenging. Even after waiting an average of 29 days for an appointment, the time spent with your family physician is often limited to a mere 7 minutes. We recognize that long wait times, limited access to your doctor, frustrating phone trees, layers of staff and administration, co-payments, insurance hassles, and unpredictable bills from insurers deter individuals from seeking medical care and contribute to rising healthcare costs in the United States. It is clear that the traditional model primarily focuses on sickness.
